Cold spray symposium – including machine visit and guided tour NLR
On Thursday, November 4, the Dutch Cold Spray Team – Dycomet Europe, KLM Engineering & Maintenance, Flame Spray Technologies, NLR, Vereniging Thermisch Spuiten and Flam3D member Vereniging ION – is organising a symposium at NLR (in Marknesse) to present the new technology Gas Dynamic Cold Spray, and to explore the possibilities of this technology. The language of instruction is Dutch, but the sheets will be in English.
Gas Dynamic Cold Spray, in other countries also known as Kinetic Fusion, Kinetic Metallization or Cold Spray Additive Manufacturing (CSAM), is a relatively new technology that is currently classified under the processes “thermal spraying”. It is a process in which powder particles are contained in a relatively cold and solid state. The powder particles are accelerated to supersonic speeds and, on collision with the substrate to be coated, the powder particles deform in such a way that they adhere to the substrate material. The technology can be used in many industries, including aerospace, automotive, process installations, offshore and infrastructure.
One of the major advantages of the cold spray technology is the absence of thermal stress on the substrate. Cold spray is therefore applicable for metallizing structures without thermal stress, metallizing a substrate (applying thin layers), geometrical or structural repairs of all kinds of components (applying thick layers), building new structures on existing components and even for 3D printing. As an Additive Manufacturing process, cold spray can manufacture both small and large components with a high build speed at relatively low costs.
